Celebrating the Legendary Career and Lasting Impact of NBA Hall of Famer Ralph Sampson
(CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – April 10, 2025) – University of Virginia (UVA) President Jim Ryan will honor UVA Basketball Legend and NBA Hall of Famer, Ralph Sampson at a Legacy Unveiling private event. This prestigious occasion honoring the extraordinary basketball career and enduring influence of Sampson will take place on Sunday, April 13, 2025, from 3:30 – 5:30 PM at Newcomb Hall, University of Virginia, located at 180 McCormick Road in Charlottesville, VA.
This special evening will feature the unveiling of a commemorative photo celebrating Ralph Sampson’s legendary journey and far-reaching impact. In addition, the event will include a heartfelt tribute to his mother, Sarah Sampson, in celebration of her birthday and in honor of the profound support and guidance she provided throughout his life. Invited guests include university officials, former teammates, sports analysts, UVA alumni, corporate sponsors, and community members from Charlottesville and across the State of Virginia. The commemorative piece will serve as a lasting symbol of Sampson’s legacy, inspiring generations to come.
A 1983 graduate of the University of Virginia and one of the most celebrated college athletes in basketball history, Ralph Sampson’s legacy at UVA is unmatched. As center for the Cavaliers, he led the team to an NIT title in 1980, an NCAA Final Four appearance in 1981, and an Elite Eight finish in 1983. He is one of only two players in history to win the Naismith Award three times, sharing this distinction with Bill Walton, and is also a two-time Wooden Award recipient. His contributions to the sport and the university continue to resonate.
